Thirteenth Week in Perth, Australia:
This week was a pretty uneventful week. Considering I had two major assessments due this Friday (5/18/2018), I spent a majority of my time sitting at both the library and Curtin Stadium. They both eventually came down to the last minute; submitting my final assessment approximately one hour before the latest submission time/date. Even though my primary assessment left me feeling slightly hopeless, my secondary assessment left me feeling remarkable! I don’t think I’ve ever felt that confident about a last-minute submission before in my entire academic career. On the other hand, moments in which weren’t spent stressing about completing assessments were spent training my friend Shayla and attending this week’s tutorials. Thank God the horrendous part is completed, however, because this weekend I will be able to finally relax!
Are you making progress with the language? Any funny stories of language gaffes?
Having been in Australia for a little over three months, I am finally beginning to make progress with the language! I’ve found myself feeling the unrelenting urge to use vocabulary such as “reckon”, “arvo”, and even “mate”. I also refer to college/homework as “uni”. However, regardless of how hard I attempt to refer to the bathroom as the “toilet”, I cannot seem to get that adjustment to stick. I suppose that might be because I consider it to be a bizarre shift in terminology? This has further emerged immense language gaffes, causing the locals to look at me strangely whenever I refer to their toilet rooms as “bathrooms”. I guess you could say I’ve become somewhat accustomed to witnessing this considering I now laugh at myself for using the American terminology!
